Not My Favourite Job

Today I was reminded why I'm not overly fond of derailleur gears. The bicycle came in for a service with the gears not working at all. The rear gear cable was seized and the outer casing was kinked and broken. The rear derailleur itself was totally gummed up with a sticky, muddy goo.

I ended up with the rear mechanism completely removed from the bike and in bits on my workbench just so I could clean it. The chain and rear sprocket cluster were in a similar mess.

I cleaned and reassembled everything and reinstalled it with new outer casing. It is now working as it should.

The rest of the service was nice and easy.

Hub gears simply don't get into that sort of mess. Why put gears that need to be kept clean into the hands of people who are never going to clean them?
