Dad walked.me home with it from the shop on Barking road between Greengate and Boleyn.
I took a while at riding without stabilizers but could ride dads trade.bike.around the allotments easy
I recall.a.white.saddle bag and the little.flag on the front. And dad fixing punctures.using the dinner spoons as tyre levers.

The S3C pawl spring problem was severe enough that Schwinn issued a Special Service Bulletin early in the '80s. My recollection was that the Schwinn factory issued repair "kits" which included updated "beefier" springs; I always assumed the springs came straight from SA. Schwinn used the S3C on children's models, adult ltwts, and adult trikes.

Gentlemen, I have recently undertaken the Herculian task of repairing a 1914 Sunbeam bicycle. To remove the rear wheel. empty the oil-bath, remove the front circular cover and the chain through the rear opening (remove lid). The wheel could now be removed by gently pulling backwards, then upwards. To replace the chain, use thin strands of metal-thread fastened to the chain ends. A more difficult task is to make new coils that holds the pawls in the chain-wheel in position. Use a clock-spring, cut into the right lengths. To form them to the hair-pin shape, heat the middle part over a candle. When correctly formed, cool them in oil. That slows the process, thus retaining the elasticity of the steel. Ask Veteran Cycles Club for further information. Nil desperandum!

Vince, nice piece on the London Eye. I know one of the engineers involved in its design and execution, a very clever man. He told me they had a bit of a job finding anyone to manufacture the spindle, tried all over the UK but no one wanted the job (??) and eventually it was manufactured by Skoda.

I’ve not been to London for years so haven’t had a ride on the eye, but as you say, it’s a stunning piece of work.

Hi,
I have one of these, the original bike I learned to ride on, but it's now missing the front wheel.
I am after a replacement wheel, or perhaps a whole bike I could use to help restore my old bike.
Thanks,
Grant

I'm not an expert on these so I wouldn't be able to confirm that. By the style of the bicycle I would have thought it would be earlier than that.

Vince,

I know it's been some time since you posted this about the Sturmey Archer S3C hub, but I'm in the process of restoring a Schwinn Fair Lady for my wife's birthday, and found the HSA 469 pawl springs broken in the hub. I bought two hubs on ebay, but both hubs had broken pawl springs. It looks like your modification of the HSA 120 might be the only viable solution. Do you have more details about what you did. Was a matter of bending the pawl so that it was the inverse? Thanks. Mark in Kennewick, Washington.
